Let’s walk through the 6 pillars of Lifestyle Medicine, as defined by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, adapted to children:

Children are not just small adults — they’re growing rapidly, and their brains and bodies need high-quality fuel to thrive.

🌱 Goal: A whole food, plant-based diet
🥫 Avoid: Ultra-processed foods (which often make up 70–80% of a child’s diet today)

Ultra-processed foods are designed to be addictive — they hijack the brain’s reward system and leave kids craving more, leading to mood swings, energy crashes, and long-term health issues.

👩‍⚕️ What parents can do:

  • Offer whole foods at every meal
  • Vegetables cover half the plate for lunch and dinner
  • Whole fruits for dessert
  • Start a garden in the backyard with herbs and vegetables
  • Plant a fruit tree
  • Involve kids in cooking and shopping
